Dr. Henry Swan II (1913–1996) was a Harvard-trained cardiac surgeon whose career spanned medicine, military service, exploration, and innovation. As a U.S. Army surgeon in World War II, he served in the European Theater and on D-Day at Normandy, returning home a Major. He went on to pioneer hypothermic surgical techniques that enabled the first successful open-heart operations, with his experimental “cooling tub” now housed at the Smithsonian. Swan served as Director of Surgery at the University of Colorado and later advanced veterinary medicine as head of the CSU program.
