This piece appears to be a traditional African shield, most likely from Central or East Africa, possibly attributed to the Congo or Sudan regions where hide-covered shields were commonly made. It is oval in shape, crafted from stretched animal hide over a wooden frame, and decorated with bold geometric and tribal patterns in red, black, and white pigments. The back shows a wooden crossbar handle bound with rawhide strips, a construction method typical of functional battle or ceremonial shields.
The paintwork, wear, and hand-stitched hide edging indicate age and traditional use rather than a modern reproduction. Shields like this often served both practical and symbolic roles—used in combat, but also in ritual dances, processions, and as markers of status or clan identity.
