19th-Century Ox Yoke / Harness Relic – Julesburg, Colorado, 1865 Massacre Provenance
This weathered wooden ox yoke/harness component with original iron hardware comes from a historically significant frontier site near Julesburg, Colorado. According to the accompanying typed provenance (family relic notes), this piece was gifted to the collector by a local man who stated it was part of a group of yokes found where, in February 1865, emigrants had been attacked and killed during the Indian uprisings along the Overland Trail. All supplies, oxen, and wagons were taken in the raid, and remnants—including this yoke—were later recovered.
The artifact consists of a crossbar with attached hames, retaining its original hand-forged rings, hooks, and fittings. Its heavy age patina, surface wear, and iron corrosion are consistent with prolonged outdoor exposure before collection.
Provenance: From the Sellers’s Family Collection of relics (typed documentation included, referencing item #7, “Ox yoke … Julesburg, Colo., 1865”).
Size: approx. [insert measurements here if you’d like].
Condition: Relic condition with heavy wood weathering and rusted iron; stable for display.
A rare opportunity to acquire a tangible artifact tied to the early emigrant trails and frontier conflicts of Colorado’s Plains history.
