Description:

A striking original figurative portrait rendered in pastel or chalk media on black paper, signed in the lower right by the artist with a signature reading 'R. Llasuetos' (or similar spelling). The composition depicts a young woman in three-quarter view with an upswept braided hairstyle, her face dramatically illuminated by a single overhead pendant light source rendered in the upper right corner of the composition. The artist employs a sophisticated chiaroscuro technique, using warm amber and sienna tones on the illuminated side of the face contrasted against cool teal-green shadow tones on the opposite side, a hallmark of skilled contemporary realist portraiture. The textured black paper ground serves as both background and shadow, allowing the pastel strokes to build luminosity with remarkable economy of mark-making — the hair rendered with confident white and gray strokes, the collar suggested with loose gestural white highlights. The artwork is presented on black paper estimated at approximately 9x12 inches, matted in cream and housed in a wood-grain gray-brown frame bringing the overall framed dimensions to approximately 13x17 inches, protected under glass or acrylic glazing. Condition is Very Good to Excellent: the artwork itself appears crisp and well-preserved with no visible foxing, tears, or significant smudging; a small blue mark is visible near the lower lip area in close-up photography which may be a minor media artifact or intentional accent; the frame shows minimal wear consistent with normal display use.
