Description:

This is a striking gemstone inlay world globe featuring a deep lapis lazuli-blue ocean surface accented with gold latitude and longitude grid lines, with continents crafted from an array of inlaid semi-precious stones including jade, malachite, jasper, mother of pearl, tiger's eye, and various agates. Each continent is rendered in a distinct stone chosen to reflect its geographic character, a hallmark of the Chinese-made gemstone globe tradition that became highly popular from the 1980s through the 2000s as luxury decorative objects and executive gifts. The globe measures approximately 12 inches in diameter and rotates freely within a gold-tone brass meridian ring calibrated with degree markings, which itself pivots within a large equatorial ring supported by a three-legged tripod base with hoof-style feet — a classic presentation format for this style of globe. Country names, capitals, and major geographic features are printed in red and white lettering directly onto the polished stone surface beneath a clear lacquer coat. These gemstone globes were produced primarily in China and exported worldwide, with quality varying by the number and variety of stones used; this example displays a generous variety of stones indicating a mid-to-upper tier production piece. Condition is Good to Very Good overall — the gold-tone finish on the brass stand shows wear, tarnishing, and loss in areas, particularly on the equatorial ring and tripod base. The globe surface itself is intact with no chips or cracks observed, and the stone inlays appear secure with good color saturation. The globe rotates smoothly on its axis and the meridian ring functions properly.
