Description:
This is a classic Victorian-era claret jug (wine ewer) combining a diamond-cut pressed glass body with silver-plated mounts, a style that was enormously popular in England and Europe from approximately 1870 through the early 1900s. The elongated glass body features an all-over diamond and hobnail cut pattern in two distinct registers separated by a plain band, tapering gracefully from shoulder to a pedestal base fitted with a silver-plated foot decorated with an egg-and-dart border motif. The silver-plated top mount features a wide pouring lip with a dramatic upswept spout, a beaded collar ring, and an arched decorative handle with foliate and acanthus leaf detailing — all hallmarks of high Victorian silversmithing taste. The matching pedestal base repeats the egg-and-dart engraved border, giving the piece a cohesive neoclassical aesthetic. The piece stands approximately 14-15 inches tall and would have been used at formal Victorian dining tables for serving claret or other wines. Condition is Good overall: the glass body is intact with no chips or cracks visible; the silver plate shows significant tarnish and patina throughout the spout, neck, handle, and base consistent with age, with some areas of plate wear exposing the base metal, particularly on the base pedestal and handle lower section; the collar joint between glass and metal mount appears secure. A polishing would restore much of the silver's luster. A handsome display piece for collectors of Victorian silver plate, antique barware, or decorative decanters.
