Description:
This is a striking antique Chinese pewter teapot of octagonal form, featuring six painted panels depicting Luohan (Arhat) figures in traditional landscape settings — a classic subject in Chinese decorative arts associated with Buddhist iconography. The body is constructed of pewter with an aged dark patina, framed by intricately embossed scrollwork borders surrounding each arched panel, giving the piece a lantern-like architectural quality. The fitted lid is adorned with a Greek key (meander) border motif and a rounded knob finial, while the swing bail handle is formed from wrought iron, pivoting on cast side mounts. The octagonal form with chamfered panels and the combination of pewter construction with painted pictorial inserts is characteristic of late Qing Dynasty to early Republic period Chinese export and decorative wares, roughly dating to the late 19th to early 20th century. The painted panels appear to be hand-applied paper or painted enamel inserts set beneath a protective coating, depicting robed sages or monks in mountainous settings with pine trees — a highly collectible subject matter among Asian antique collectors. Condition is Good to Very Good for its age: the pewter body shows expected oxidation and darkening throughout consistent with 100+ years of age, the painted panels show some yellowing and minor wear to the imagery, and there is minor surface grime in the embossed recesses. The lid fits properly, the handle swings freely, and the spout is intact with no visible cracks or repairs. Estimated height with handle up approximately 10-11 inches; body diameter approximately 5-6 inches.
