Description:

This is a rare and historically significant Hewlett-Packard Model 205AG Audio Signal Generator, manufactured by HP in Palo Alto, California — one of the early and iconic instruments produced by the company that would become a global technology giant. The Model 205AG was HP's precision audio frequency generator, widely used in professional audio testing and aerospace applications during the mid-20th century. The front panel features a gray wrinkle-finish steel chassis with a large precision frequency dial spanning approximately 20-200 Hz range with X1, X10, X100 multiplier settings, two Westinghouse-branded VU/level meters labeled 'Output Level' and 'Input Level' with Hewlett Packard branding, multiple black Bakelite control knobs for frequency range, input DB, volume, DB attenuation, impedance (200/600/5000 ohm), and output terminals. The unit retains its original red-and-gold U.S. Air Force property tag numbered TR-49489, assigned to the R&D Laboratories of Hughes Aircraft Co., Culver City, California — an extraordinary provenance connecting this instrument to Cold War-era aerospace defense research at one of Howard Hughes's most secretive facilities. The Westinghouse meters are branded with the HP logo, consistent with early postwar production, and the panel labeling 'AUDIO SIGNAL GENERATOR MODEL 205AG HEWLETT PACKARD PALO ALTO CALIFORNIA' is clearly legible. Condition is Good to Fair overall: the chassis shows significant surface grime, oxidation, and scattered rust spotting consistent with decades of storage; the large frequency dial plate has surface scratches and scuffs; the Bakelite knobs are intact with no visible cracks; both VU meters appear intact with readable faces though the lower meter shows some yellowing/staining to the dial face; the military property tag is present and legible though worn; one screw hole near the upper left appears to have a missing screw; functionality is unknown and the unit is sold as-is for display or restoration. This piece represents a convergence of early Silicon Valley history, Cold War military provenance, and vintage test equipment collecting that makes it exceptionally desirable to HP collectors, vintage electronics enthusiasts, and military surplus historians.
