Description:

This estate auction lot features a collector-assembled group of U.S. Jefferson Nickels, spanning 1938 through 1942, and including a mix of early-date Jefferson nickels and World War II silver “War Nickels.” The Jefferson nickel series debuted in 1938, making these first-year and early issues especially desirable for collectors building complete date-and-mint sets.

Why These Coins Are Unique

Several coins in this grouping are collector-noted for “Full Steps” (FS) on the reverse of Monticello. Full Steps refers to the visibility and separation of the steps leading up to Monticello, a key strike-quality detail actively sought by Jefferson nickel collectors. Coins with stronger step definition are often retained for study and comparison due to their superior strikes relative to typical circulation examples.

The lot also includes World War II-era silver Jefferson nickels (1942), produced when the U.S. Mint changed the alloy to 35% silver to conserve nickel for wartime use. These coins carry added appeal for both their historical significance and precious metal content.

Together, this grouping offers:

  • Early-series Jefferson nickels

  • Collector-identified strike-quality characteristics

  • Wartime silver issues

  • A snapshot of Jefferson nickel production during a formative period of the series

Coins are housed individually in 2x2 cardboard holders with handwritten collector annotations referencing dates, mint marks, and strike characteristics such as Full Steps.

Important Collector Notation & Accuracy Disclaimer

Dates, mint marks, strike designations (including “Full Steps”), silver content, and other information written on the holders were handwritten by the original collector and have not been independently verified. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information noted on the cards. Buyers should rely on their own evaluation of the photographs and bid accordingly.
