Description:

This estate auction lot features two 1934-D U.S. Buffalo (Indian Head) Nickels, struck at the Denver Mint, and retained together by a longtime collector due to noted reverse and design characteristics. The Buffalo nickel series is one of the most iconic and actively collected U.S. coin designs, and Denver-minted examples from the mid-1930s are particularly popular with variety and die-study collectors.

Why These Coins Are Unique

One coin in this grouping is collector-noted for an unusual “FIVE CENTS” reverse appearance, with heavy lettering, surface irregularities, and die-related characteristics that stand out when compared side-by-side with a standard 1934-D Buffalo nickel. Collectors often seek these types of coins for:

  • Possible die wear, die fatigue, or die state variations

  • Differences in reverse lettering strength and definition

  • Study of minting characteristics within the same year and mint

The paired presentation allows bidders to directly compare two examples from the same date and mint, which is especially appealing for collectors who focus on Buffalo nickel varieties, die states, and mint production differences.

The coins are housed individually in 2x2 cardboard holders with handwritten collector annotations referencing the “FIVE CENTS” reverse and date/mint details.

Important Collector Notation & Accuracy Disclaimer
