Lot #86 - Antique 19th Century Mahogany-Veneer Gothic Steeple Clock with Reverse Painted Nautical Ship Scene
This antique American Clock Company Gothic Steeple Clock features a distinctive mahogany-veneer pointed case and a hand-painted reverse-glass lower tablet depicting a historic sailing ship. Produced in Connecticut during the mid-19th century, this model is prized by collectors for its classic Victorian design and its key-wound mechanical movement. Ideal for antique collectors, maritime enthusiasts, or traditional home decor aficionados seeking a timeless statement piece.
The American Clock Company was a highly influential entity in 19th-century horology, operating primarily as a centralized sales consortium rather than an independent manufacturing factory. Formed in New York City on December 22, 1864, the company officially commenced business on January 2, 1865. It was created through a joint agreement by prominent giants of Connecticut clockmaking—including the Seth Thomas Clock Co., New Haven Clock Co., E.N. Welch Manufacturing Co., and the William L. Gilbert Clock Company. The purpose being, instead of competing aggressively in the market, these massive firms pooled resources to use the American Clock Company as a unified catalog and distribution house to market their mass-produced, brass-movement timepieces across the United States and global markets.
