Description:

This offering features a vintage Dayton Automatic 10-Amp Battery Charger, Model 2Z578B, manufactured by Dayton Electric Mfg. Co. in Chicago, U.S.A. This robust unit is designed to charge 12-volt batteries at 10 amperes, automatically reducing current to maintain a full charge, and features an automatic circuit breaker for protection. The charger presents a classic utilitarian design with a white metal casing, a red control panel, and an analog amperage meter. It includes the original attached power cord and battery clamps, which are currently stored in a plastic container. The charger measures approximately 10 inches wide, 7 inches deep, and 8 inches high including the handle. This piece represents a functional and collectible example of mid-20th-century American-made automotive tools, often sought after by collectors for their durability and vintage aesthetic. The clear labeling on the front panel provides detailed specifications, including AC input of 120 volts, 60 Hz, 1.9 amps, and DC output of 12.8 volts, 10 amps. The back panel includes important safety warnings and instructions. The unit shows honest wear consistent with its age and intended use, including surface scratches, scuffs, and some discoloration to the white casing. The red control panel has some fading and minor scuffs, and the plastic cover over the amperage meter is cracked, though the meter itself appears intact. The power cord and battery clamps appear to be in good, usable condition. Overall, the charger is in good vintage condition, appearing structurally sound, but its functionality has not been tested.
