Description:

An eclectic and diverse collection of 12 hand-carved and folk art figurines representing multiple world cultures and traditions, making this an exceptional lot for the global folk art or world curiosities collector. The Asian grouping includes two tall Chinese immortal/deity figures carved in dark hardwood (approximately 7-8 inches tall), a lighter caramel-toned resin or boxwood Guanyin-style female figure holding a flower on a carved base, a dark reddish-brown carved figure of a robed elder on a decorative base, and a small amber/resin translucent robed figure. A carved ebony-toned elephant with ivory-toned tusk accents stands on a wooden platform base. The South American folk art pieces include a hand-carved dark wood llama with pack saddle (approximately 6 inches tall) and a pair of painted wood figures depicting an elderly man with walking stick in Tyrolean/Alpine or Andean folk costume and a woman in traditional dress — these are consistent with Anri-style or similar European/South American hand-carved tourist figures from the mid-20th century. Two primitive totem-style carved wood figures with abalone or glass inlaid eyes represent Pacific Island or Pre-Columbian inspired folk art. Rounding out the lot are a Japanese Kokeshi-style painted wooden doll in blue and yellow, a small painted black enamel elephant figurine with colorful folk art decoration, and a small carved ivory or bone polar bear grouping on a dark oval base. Condition is overall Good to Very Good for the group; the Asian carved figures show age-appropriate patina and minor surface wear, the painted folk figures retain most of their original polychrome paint with light wear to high points, the elephant has minor surface scuffs, and the kokeshi doll is intact with vivid paint. The resin/amber figure shows no chips. Some pieces may have minor dust accumulation in carved recesses consistent with display age. A wonderful curated collection spanning Asian, South American, European folk, and Pacific traditions.
