Description:

This exceptional lot of three handwoven Tarahumara baskets was sourced from Tubac Country Market, Inc. in Tubac, Arizona (P.O. Box 1960, Tubac, AZ 85646), a well-known purveyor of authentic Tarahumara crafts from the Sierra Madre region of Chihuahua, Mexico. The lot includes three distinct pieces: a beautifully woven globular olla-form basket with a fine herringbone/diagonal twill weave in natural beargrass or palm leaf, a charming figural woven frog trinket box with a removable lid featuring painted black stripe markings, glass bead eyes, and green lacquered wicker feet and front legs, and a cylindrical open basket with green and natural two-tone bamboo or reed weaving. The accompanying original yellow Tubac Country Market informational card explains that Tarahumara baskets are functional utilitarian objects used for transporting and storing goods, plaited in diagonal parallel rib designs, and crafted by skilled Tarahumara women and some men working between household chores. The olla basket measures approximately 4 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide and displays an exceptionally tight, even weave with a flared rim, while the frog lidded box stands approximately 3.5 inches tall and the cylindrical basket measures roughly 3.5 inches tall by 4 inches in diameter. Condition is Very Good overall; the olla basket shows minimal wear with tight, intact weaving and no breaks, the frog box retains vibrant painted details with minor surface wear to the lacquer on the feet, and the cylindrical basket is structurally sound with good color retention. Original retail tag remains attached to the frog basket. A wonderful Southwest folk art collection piece with original provenance documentation.
