Description:

This is a matched pair of traditional wood-frame snowshoes bearing a Northwood brand label visible on the binding hardware area, consistent with mid-20th century North American manufacture. The frames are constructed from steam-bent hardwood — appearing to be white ash — formed into the classic elongated teardrop or modified bear-paw shape with a pointed tail, measuring approximately 13 inches wide by 48 inches long. The decking is woven rawhide lacing in a tight diamond/hexagonal pattern across the toe and body sections, with a more open weave at the tail, all showing the characteristic dark honey-brown patina of aged rawhide. Original leather bindings with metal buckle hardware remain intact on both snowshoes, positioned at the toe pivot area in the traditional style that allows heel lift during stride. Northwood snowshoes were a well-regarded American manufacturer producing traditional wood-and-rawhide snowshoes popular with trappers, hunters, and backcountry travelers throughout the mid-century era, and this style would have been ideal for Colorado Rocky Mountain winter travel. Condition is Good to Very Good overall: the wooden frames are structurally sound with no cracks or breaks, retaining their original finish with light surface scuffs and minor soiling; the rawhide lacing is intact and complete on both shoes with expected darkening and stiffening from age and use; the leather bindings show dryness, cracking, and wear consistent with decades of storage, and while functional in appearance, the leather should be conditioned before use. One snowshoe retains a more complete binding assembly than the other. An excellent display piece for a Colorado mountain cabin, lodge, or ski chalet, or a functional restoration project for the backcountry enthusiast.
