This is an authentic hand-coiled and hand-polished sgraffito pottery vase by Alfreda C. Fragua of Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico, a highly regarded contemporary Pueblo potter whose work is sought by serious collectors of Native American art throughout the Southwest and Rocky Mountain region. The vessel features a classic globular form with an off-center pinched opening at the top, a hallmark design element of contemporary Jemez pottery, measuring approximately 4.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches in diameter. The lower two-thirds of the body is burnished to a rich, deep red-brown slip, while the upper portion retains the natural tan-buff clay body, creating a striking two-tone contrast that is characteristic of Fragua's distinctive style. Intricate sgraffito (scratch-carved) designs encircle the entire vessel, depicting a detailed sea turtle with geometric patterning on its shell on one side, and a stylized butterfly or Pahos (prayer feather) motif with spiral and geometric elements on the reverse, all executed with exceptional precision and artistry. The sgraffito technique involves applying a slip, burnishing to a high polish, and then carefully carving away designs to reveal the contrasting clay body beneath — a labor-intensive process requiring great skill. Alfreda C. Fragua works from Jemez Pueblo (PO Box 14, Jemez Pueblo, NM 87024), and her business card accompanies this lot, providing direct provenance and authenticity. Condition is Excellent — no chips, cracks, or repairs are observed; the polished slip surface is intact with strong luster, and the sgraffito carving is crisp and well-defined throughout; this piece appears to be in display-ready condition consistent with careful ownership.
