Description:

This lot presents a WM Rogers silver-plated flatware set housed in a striking black lacquered wood storage chest decorated in the Chinoiserie style, dating to the mid-20th century, approximately 1940s-1960s. The storage box is the standout visual element, finished in glossy black lacquer and adorned with hand-painted or transfer-printed gold Chinoiserie scenes depicting a pagoda, windswept pine trees, a wooden footbridge, and two figures carrying shoulder poles — classic motifs drawn from the European fascination with East Asian aesthetics that flourished from the 18th century onward and experienced a strong revival in the Art Deco and post-war decorating periods. The box features a centered top carry handle, bracket feet, and two copper-toned metal butterfly clasp hardware pieces on the front, giving it a distinctly decorative cabinet quality suitable for display. The flatware pieces are stamped 'WM ROGERS' with a star mark, identifying them as products of the William Rogers Manufacturing Company, a well-known American silverplate producer operating under the International Silver Company umbrella, whose wares are highly collectible today. The box measures approximately 14 inches wide by 11 inches tall by 4 inches deep based on photographic estimation, sized to hold a service for multiple place settings. Condition is rated Good overall: the lacquer box shows moderate surface scratching, scuffing, and wear to the black finish consistent with decades of use, with notable wear to the top handle edges and corners revealing the wood substrate beneath; the gold Chinoiserie decoration remains largely intact and legible; the metal hardware clasps show light tarnish and patina. The flatware condition cannot be fully assessed from images but the WM Rogers stamp is clearly visible and legible. This is an attractive decorative storage piece and functional flatware set appealing to collectors of Chinoiserie decor, silverplate, and vintage entertaining accessories.
