Description:

This impressive decorative wall plaque reproduces the classic 1628 double-hemisphere world map titled 'A New and Accurate Mappe of the World, Drawne According to the Latest Discoveries - 1628,' rendered in rich gold-tone brass and copper-toned materials on a wood-backed octagonal-cornered board. The piece features two large raised circular hemisphere maps — the Western and Eastern hemispheres — with detailed period-accurate cartography including landmass outlines, sea names, latitude/longitude lines, and archaic place names such as 'America Mexicana,' 'Magallanica,' and 'The Southerne Unknowne Land South.' Surrounding the hemispheres are elaborate period-style decorative elements including portrait medallions of Sir Francis Drake and Thomas Cavendish, allegorical figures representing the four elements (Fire, Water, Earth, Air), a central armillary sphere medallion, and a compass rose at the bottom center. The brass title plate across the top is engraved in period script, and the entire surface features etched gold-on-brown decorative scrollwork and mythological sea creatures consistent with 17th-century cartographic tradition. Construction appears to be a lithographed or photo-etched brass-toned metal sheet mounted on a wood substrate, measuring approximately 30 inches wide by 22 inches tall, with an octagonal frame profile and small mounting bolts visible at the corners of the title plate. Condition is Very Good overall; the surface displays minor light scratches and slight uneven reflective patina consistent with age and display use, the brass title plate shows minor tarnish at edges, and there are no significant dents, cracks, or missing elements noted. A handsome piece for a study, library, or office with strong appeal to map collectors, nautical decor enthusiasts, and Colorado home decorators seeking Old World cartographic art.
