This is a pair of vintage figural bookends depicting an elderly scholar or gentleman seated in a tufted leather-style wingback armchair, engrossed in reading an open book. The figures are cast metal with a multi-tone brass-like painted finish featuring rich gold, bronze, and verdigris green tones throughout the clothing, chair, and shoes, while the face and hands are rendered in a contrasting cream or ivory paint to simulate flesh tones. Each piece is mounted on a dark brown octagonal base, likely cast iron or heavy pot metal, which provides substantial weight and stability for bookend function. The side profile reveals impressive detail including nail-head trim along the chair upholstery, carefully sculpted fabric folds in the figure's coat, and individually rendered book pages — hallmarks of quality American Art Deco figural casting from the 1920s–1940s. These types of scholar or philosopher bookends were popular decorative accessories produced by several American manufacturers during the Arts and Crafts and Art Deco periods, often attributed to makers such as Ronson, Armor Bronze, or similar foundries of the era, though no maker's mark is visible in the photos. Condition is rated Good overall — both figures retain strong structural integrity with no breaks or missing parts; however, there is notable paint loss and chipping to the face/head areas on both figures, surface wear and crazing to the painted finish consistent with age, and minor scuffing to the bases. The brass-like finish shows honest patina and age-appropriate wear throughout.
