Description:

This is a hand-painted Vietnamese lacquer-style painting on black fabric (likely velvet or silk), depicting a traditional Vietnamese junk sailing vessel with three fishermen wearing iconic non la (conical hats) navigating open seas beneath a dark sky filled with seagulls. The painting employs a classic Vietnamese folk art technique using rich earth tones of brown and gold for the vessel's woven bamboo sails and hull, with vivid blue and white accents in the water and figures' clothing, all set against a dramatic black background that makes the colors luminous and striking. Vietnamese black lacquer paintings and velvet paintings of this style were produced prolifically from the 1960s through the 1990s, often sold as tourist art and export pieces, and are closely associated with the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City art markets; the junk boat subject matter is one of the most iconic and collectible themes in Vietnamese folk and decorative art. The work is signed in blue paint in the lower left corner with a cursive signature that appears to read 'Trung' or similar Vietnamese name, indicating this is an original hand-painted work rather than a mass-produced print. The piece is professionally presented in a wood-grain brown frame with a warm peach/salmon mat board and a thin gold inner fillet, with the overall framed dimensions estimated at approximately 18 x 14 inches. Condition is Very Good overall; the painting surface shows minor dust speckling visible under close inspection, the black background retains strong depth and color saturation, the frame shows light surface wear consistent with age, and the mat board has minor soiling near the lower edge. Glass is intact with no cracks. A decorative and collectible piece of Southeast Asian folk art suitable for display.
