Description:
This is an original vintage lithograph print of Warner Sallman's iconic 'Head of Christ,' bearing the printed copyright notice 'Copyright 1941 Kriebel & Bates' along with Sallman's facsimile signature and the date 1941 visible in the lower portion of the image. Warner Sallman (1892–1968) was an American artist whose 'Head of Christ' became one of the most reproduced religious images in history, with an estimated 500 million copies distributed worldwide through churches, hospitals, and homes throughout the mid-20th century. Published by Kriebel & Bates, a prominent religious publishing house, this 1941 edition represents one of the earliest commercial printings of this now-iconic image, making it a highly collectible piece of American religious art history. The print depicts Christ in a three-quarter profile view gazing upward, rendered in warm sepia and golden tones with masterful chiaroscuro lighting that gives the image its characteristic ethereal quality. The print is housed in its period-appropriate gold-tone wood frame featuring a rope-twist decorative molding with inner liner, estimated overall framed dimensions of approximately 14 x 17 inches. Condition is rated Very Good for its age of 80+ years; the print itself displays minor toning and age-related darkening consistent with period paper stock, and the gold frame shows light wear and minor scuffs to the gilding but remains structurally sound with no breaks or losses. A wonderful piece of mid-century American Christian devotional art and a significant collectible for religious art enthusiasts, church historians, or Americana collectors.
