This is a substantial antique cast iron sad iron (flat iron) marked with the number '20' in raised numerals on the top face, dating to the mid-to-late 1800s. The body is a classic tapered wedge form with a pointed toe and squared heel, featuring a stepped/molded profile along the sides — a construction detail typical of quality American and European cast iron flat irons of the Victorian era. The handle is a distinctive hand-forged wrought iron twisted bar design, arching over the body and pinned into the iron at both sides, a style associated with pre-detachable-handle flat irons used directly on the stovetop for heating. The number '20' likely denotes the iron's weight or size designation within a manufacturer's production series; size 20 irons are among the larger examples, suggesting use for heavy fabrics such as wool or denim. Flat irons of this type were essential household tools before the advent of electric irons, heated on wood or coal stoves and used in pairs so one could heat while the other was in use. The sole (bottom) shows heavy orange-red surface rust across the entire pressing surface, while the top and sides display a mix of dark iron patina, mineral deposits, and green verdigris oxidation near the handle attachment points, indicating age and outdoor or damp storage. Condition is rated Fair — structurally solid and complete with no cracks or breaks observed, handle is firmly attached, but significant rust on the sole and overall heavy patina/corrosion throughout; would benefit from wire brushing and oiling for display or restoration use. Measures approximately 7 inches long, 3.5 inches wide, and stands roughly 4.5 inches tall to the top of the handle arc.
