Rare 1840s Ridgway's Plum Transferware Luncheon Plates Berry Bowls - Scenes From Chas Dickens "Old Curiosity Shop"
One footed covered dish, 5 berry bowls, 6 plates.
Pattern Description: Purple (Plum) Transferware, Scenes illustrating Charles Dicken's 'Old Curiosity Shop', Lattice Rim, Scalloped Edge, No Trim. Made in England. This pattern is discontinued. These items were made before 1847 (see 'History'). In addition to the purple transferware version being sold in this listing, the 'Humphrey's Clock' pattern was sold in Blue, Red, Brown and Green, and possibly others.
History: These pieces have the W.R.S.& Co. Ridgway's Mark that existed during the period of ca. 1838 to 1847. W.R.S. & Co. is the abbreviation for William Ridgway, Son & Company that operated at Church Works, Hanley, Stoke-upon-Trent, England. This era of the Ridgways companies followed the John & William Ridgway [ca. 1814-30] and was concurrent with William Ridgway (& Co.) [ca. 1830-54] and Ridgway & Abington [ca. 1835-60]. This evolution signified when William Ridgway took his son Edward John (James) Ridgway into business with him at the Church Works. Leonard J. Abington was also a partner thus making the '& Co' of William Ridgway, Son & Co. In April 1847 William Ridgway retired from the business - Edward J Ridgway and Leonard J Abington continued as Ridgway & Abington, thus no longer operating under the W.R.S.& Co. name from that date forward.
Condition: There are no cracks, chips or repairs. Most show heavy fine crazing, with some staining, as is normal for old English Ironstone Pottery.
