Description:
This is a classic late Victorian-era flat-top steamer trunk dating to approximately the 1880s-1900s, constructed in the traditional American trunk-making style that dominated the golden age of rail and steamship travel. The trunk features the hallmark construction of the period: horizontal hardwood slats (likely oak or ash) alternating with olive-green canvas-covered panels, all secured with black vulcanized fiber corner panels and iron nail-head trim throughout. The hardware is particularly noteworthy — ornate cast brass side hasps, decorative brass corner bail handles, and a central brass lock mechanism that upon close inspection bears a maker's stamp reading what appears to be a New Haven, Illinois or similar Midwest trunk hardware manufacturer, consistent with major American trunk hardware suppliers of the era such as Yale & Towne or National Lock. The leather strapping — both the cross-top straps and the vertical front strap — is original period leather, now aged to a rich reddish-brown with expected drying and cracking. Estimated dimensions are approximately 34 inches wide x 20 inches deep x 24 inches tall. Condition is rated Good for age: the canvas covering shows significant spotting, staining, and surface soiling consistent with 120+ years of use and storage; the wood slats retain good structural integrity with minor surface scratches and oxidation; the black fiber panels show paint loss and surface wear; the brass hardware retains much of its original casting detail with expected tarnish and patina; the leather straps are dry and cracked but intact and still functional; the lock mechanism appears present and functional though no key is included. This trunk would make an exceptional decorative accent piece, coffee table, or storage chest in a Western, rustic, or Victorian-inspired Colorado home interior.
