Description:
This is a classic American Victorian-era mantel clock, likely produced by Seth Thomas or a comparable Connecticut shelf clock manufacturer circa 1880s-1900s, featuring the highly popular 'adamantine' or column-style architectural case design that dominated parlor mantels of the Gilded Age. The substantial wooden case is finished in a rich mahogany-toned veneer with incised decorative scrollwork etched into the front panel flanking the dial, and is flanked by four faux marble (likely celluloid or painted wood) Corinthian-capped columns in a warm amber/yellow tone with ornate cast brass capitals. The clock rests on four elaborate cast brass claw-and-scroll feet with matching brass corner spandrels, giving it a commanding presence estimated at approximately 17 inches wide by 11 inches tall. The white porcelain or painted metal dial features crisp black Roman numerals, a decorative pierced brass center medallion with acanthus leaf and pinecone motifs marked 'S' and 'F' (slow/fast regulation indicators), a repoussé brass bezel with egg-and-dart detailing, and a convex beveled glass crystal. Two winding arbors are visible at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions indicating an 8-day striking movement, likely a spring-driven half-hour and hour strike on a coiled gong. Condition is Good to Very Good overall: the wooden case retains strong color and finish with minor surface wear and light scratching to the top; the faux marble columns show age-appropriate yellowing; the brass feet and bezel display expected tarnish and patina; the dial has minor foxing/spotting; running condition of the movement is unknown and sold as-is — servicing by a clock repair professional is recommended.
