This item is a Māori treasure box known as a waka huia, traditionally used to store personal adornments. 
 

New Zealand, originating from the Māori people. Purpose: These canoe-shaped containers held treasured items like pendants (hei tiki) and feathers from the now-extinct huia bird.  Design: Typically carved from wood and sometimes featuring inlaid pāua shell for eyes, they often depict ancestral figures and curvilinear designs
