Description:

It was pointed out that two of the twelve of these books are from a different yet similar set.  New details are below.  If you would like your bid removed, please email that request and we will remove it.  Sorry for the confusion.

    1. Japan: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese (10 volumes, 1897–98, J.B. Millet Co.)

      • Edited by Captain F. Brinkley, with an essay by Kakuzo Okakura.

      • These are the volumes labeled Section One through Section Ten.

      • The Section One has the Edition de Luxe limitation page, showing copy No. 143 of 750.

    2. The Art of Japan (separate 10-volume set, also by F. Brinkley, published by J.B. Millet earlier in the 1880s–90s).

      • This Set mixes the two titles:

        • 10 volumes of Japan: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese (Sections 1–10).

        • Plus 2 volumes of The Art of Japan (Vol. I and II) - Sections 11-12

        • Together, they look like a 12-volume set, but they’re actually from two different, though related, Brinkley series.

The ornate covers feature traditional wave and fan motifs with distinct section labels. Interior images show exquisite hand-colored plates of ceramics, textiles, architecture, and traditional scenes—hallmarks of Meiji-era craftsmanship and Western fascination with Japanese art during the late 19th century. Given the visible condition (some edge wear, fraying on tassels), the set still retains high value for collectors of antique books, Asian art, or Japonisme.  The first pages of each book are uncut.
