Description:

This estate auction lot features a collector-assembled group of U.S. Jefferson Nickels, spanning 1938 through 1944, and including a desirable mix of early-date Jefferson nickels and World War II silver “War Nickels.” The Jefferson nickel series began in 1938, making these early issues especially appealing to collectors building date-and-mint sets.

Why These Coins Are Unique

This grouping stands out due to the inclusion of World War II silver alloy Jefferson nickels (1942–1945). During WWII, nickel was diverted for military use, and the U.S. Mint temporarily changed the coin’s composition to 35% silver, making these the only silver Jefferson nickels ever produced. These coins are easily identified by their large mint marks above Monticello on the reverse and remain highly collectible for both historical significance and silver content.

The lot also includes early non-silver Jefferson nickels from 1938–1939, representing the first years of issue for the series. Early-date Jefferson nickels are commonly sought by collectors due to lower survival rates in higher condition and their importance within the series timeline.

Coins are housed individually in 2x2 cardboard holders with handwritten collector notations referencing dates and mint marks.
