Antique tramp art miniature dresser featuring a real mirror and three functional drawers that open and close. This hand carved folk art piece is constructed using layered wood with the traditional chip carved, notched edges that define classic tramp art craftsmanship. The rich, darkened finish and stacked geometric detailing reflect the careful, repetitive handwork that makes each example unique.
Tramp art emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is strongly associated with itinerant workers, laborers, and individuals living on the margins of society. Using simple materials such as discarded cigar boxes and scrap wood, makers created highly decorative objects through a distinctive technique of layering and carving repetitive patterns. Despite the name, tramp art was not necessarily made by “tramps,” but rather by resourceful craftsmen working with limited means. Today it is recognized as an important category of American folk art.
This charming miniature dresser form, complete with mirror, is both decorative and functional. The drawers slide open, making it suitable for jewelry or small keepsakes.
