Lot # 151 - Original Art For Newspaper Uncle Sam Cartoons Two 1922 Pieces Part of Massive Hammer Collection. Mary Amaryllis Hammer, Hazel Lou's Grandmother, had a collection of these Uncle Sam pieces and was famous for it! These were Drawn by J. Campbell Cory, a famous cartoonist until he died in 1925. From NYC to Chicago to Denver, his final years were as a cartoonist for the Denver Times and the Rocky Mountain News. He established the Denver Academy of Applied Art with Perce Pearce. Cory died in Denver November 17, 1925, aged 58.
Included with this lot is a photo of Mary Amaryllis Hammer in the late 1800s (Chicago) showing off her extensive collection, plus newspaper articles about her and other related ephemera. Mary Hammer was married to D. Harry Hammer, Chicago Circuit Court Judge. Some of these pieces must have gotten passed down to her daughter, Hazel Hammer Humphrey. They each measure about 11 x 14". Still in very good condition!
