Description:

This is a large-format reproduction print of John James Audubon's iconic 'Great Blue Heron' (Ardea Herodias), identified as Plate CCXI (221), No. 43 from 'The Birds of America.' The caption text at the bottom reads 'Great blue Heron, Ardea Herodian' and notes it is 'From the Collection of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company,' indicating this is one of the well-known Northwestern Mutual Life chromolithographic reproductions published in the mid-20th century, engraved, printed, and colored by R. Havell. The print showcases Audubon's masterful life-size depiction of the Great Blue Heron in a dramatic preening pose, arching its long neck downward amid marsh grasses and water, rendered in rich slate blues, charcoal grays, dusty rose, and sage greens against a warm cream background — the level of feather detail is extraordinary. The image area measures approximately 26 x 34 inches, and the overall framed dimensions are approximately 30 x 38 inches; the frame is a natural wood tone with a gold inner fillet and a linen/fabric liner mat, presenting the print in a classic, gallery-appropriate manner. Audubon's original elephant folio plates (1827–1838) are among the most celebrated works in natural history art, and these Northwestern Mutual reproductions — distributed as collector's editions — are highly sought after for their large scale, faithful color reproduction, and institutional provenance. Condition is Very Good overall: the print itself shows minimal toning consistent with age, colors remain vibrant and unfaded, and there are no visible tears, foxing, or significant soiling visible in the image area; the frame shows light surface wear and minor scuffs to the wood consistent with normal handling and display use. The linen mat is clean and intact with no staining. A handsome, display-ready piece ideal for a Colorado mountain home, lodge, or nature-themed interior.
