Description:

This is an original acrylic or oil painting on canvas board titled 'Little Men' dated 1964, signed by the artist M. Wagner in the lower right corner. A small embossed metal title plate affixed to the lower frame rail reads 'LITTLE MEN 1964,' confirming both the title and date of execution. The composition depicts three young men with mod-era mop-top hairstyles dressed in dark suits with white dress shirts and ties, rendered in a loose, gestural figurative style against a warm abstract background of golden yellows, burnt oranges, and muted reds — a palette and subject matter very much in keeping with the cultural energy of the British Invasion era of the early-to-mid 1960s. The three figures bear a striking stylistic resemblance to early Beatles or similar British Invasion pop group portraiture that was popular among amateur and semi-professional artists during the height of Beatlemania in 1964, making this a compelling piece of mid-century pop culture folk art. The painting is set in a natural light wood frame, likely oak or ash, with a simple flat profile measuring approximately 16x22 inches overall. The artist M. Wagner remains unidentified in major auction records, suggesting this is the work of a talented regional or amateur artist working in the figurative tradition during the 1960s. Condition is Good to Very Good: the canvas shows minor toning and light surface grime consistent with 60 years of age, there are a few small areas of minor paint loss or scuffing in the lower center of the canvas, and the wood frame shows light wear and minor nicks to the corners, but no cracks, tears, or significant restoration are evident. The title plate is intact and legible.
