Description:

A classic example of American Victorian parlor furniture, this medallion-back armchair dates to approximately 1860-1890 and exemplifies the Rococo Revival aesthetic that dominated Victorian-era drawing rooms and parlors across the United States. The frame is constructed of solid walnut with a rich dark brown finish, featuring the characteristic oval or shield-shaped medallion back with a molded and carved crest rail adorned with scrolled foliate details at the corners — a hallmark of high-style Victorian seating. The serpentine open arms terminate in carved knuckle handholds and flow gracefully into cabriole-style front legs that end in original brass caster wheels, a period-correct detail that confirms the chair's authenticity and age. The upholstery is a gold and olive damask-style woven fabric with an allover scrolling floral and acanthus leaf pattern, applied to the oval back panel, the generously rounded seat cushion, and the padded armrests, all finished with a period-appropriate gimp trim in gold. The construction shows hand-fitted mortise-and-tenon joinery typical of pre-industrial American cabinetmaking, and the carved details on the crest rail and arm supports indicate quality craftsmanship consistent with a professional furniture maker rather than a mass-produced piece. Condition is rated Good overall: the walnut frame is structurally sound with no major breaks or repairs observed, though minor scuffs and light surface wear are present consistent with 130+ years of use; the upholstery shows age-related fading, light soiling, and some flattening of the pile particularly on the seat, and would benefit from professional cleaning or reupholstery to restore its full presentation; the brass casters appear intact and functional. A highly desirable piece for Colorado antique collectors, Victorian parlor enthusiasts, or interior designers seeking period-authentic accent seating.
