This exceptional set of five handthrown stoneware soup crocks bears the stamped mark 'AiA' on their unglazed terracotta bases, indicating production by a studio pottery artist or small artisan workshop. Each bowl features the classic French onion soup crock form with two small loop handles on opposing sides, wheel-thrown from red stoneware clay with the natural terracotta body visible at the unglazed foot ring and base. The reactive glaze treatment is the standout feature of this set — a rich, layered combination of deep cobalt blue, purple, brown, and grey-green tones that shift and pool dramatically across each piece, with characteristic drip streaks of pale celadon and teal cascading down the exterior walls, a hallmark of high-fire reduction or wood-fire kiln techniques. Interior glazing transitions from a speckled blue-purple at the rim to a mottled grey-green at the bowl floor, with each of the five pieces displaying its own unique glaze variation — a desirable quality in studio pottery that confirms individual hand-production. Each bowl measures approximately 5.5 inches in diameter and 2.5 inches in height, with a capacity suitable for soup, chili, chowder, or French onion soup gratinée. The set is oven-safe, microwave-safe, and dishwasher-safe given the stoneware construction and high-fire glaze. Condition is Very Good overall; the bowls show minimal use wear with light surface marks consistent with normal use, no chips, cracks, or repairs observed, glaze is intact and glossy throughout, and all five handles are solid and undamaged.
