Description:

This compelling hand-carved hardwood sculpture depicts a stylized human figure — likely of African or Caribbean folk art origin — with a boldly carved face featuring prominent brow, nose, and lips, topped by a wide shallow bowl form with rough-hewn organic crown elements suggesting foliage or flames. The figure is carved from a single piece of dense, dark hardwood with rich warm amber and deep espresso tones revealed through the grain, finished with a lacquer or oil coating that enhances the natural figuring of the wood. The carving technique is expressive and gestural, with visible chisel and gouge marks left intentionally as part of the aesthetic, consistent with traditional hand-carving practices common in West African, Haitian, or Caribbean folk art traditions from the mid-to-late 20th century. The reverse side of the figure shows arms wrapped around the body in a carrying pose, adding dimensional narrative to the piece. Most notably, the flat base bears hand-inscribed gold-painted text reading what appears to be 'DAKAR' or a similar proper name/place name along with additional inscribed markings, strongly suggesting Senegalese or West African origin and potentially artist-signed provenance. Estimated dimensions are approximately 11-12 inches tall and 4-5 inches wide at the bowl. Condition is Good to Very Good overall; the piece shows honest wear including surface scratches throughout, a small repair with white adhesive visible on the mid-body reverse, minor roughness to the bowl rim edges, and general patina consistent with age and handling, but remains structurally sound with no cracks or breaks to the primary form.
