Description:
mask from the Lega people, originating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. [1, 2]
  • Cultural Significance: These masks were used by members of the Bwami society, a voluntary organization that regulated social and political life through initiation rituals.
  • Design Characteristics: Often carved from wood, Lega masks typically feature a heart-shaped or elongated face covered in white kaolin clay, with large almond-shaped eyes and a small mouth.
  • Usage: The masks were not always worn on the face; smaller "passport" masks (Lukwakongo) were sometimes held or hung on a fence to be displayed during ceremonies.
  • Symbolism: The masks represent moral influence, wisdom, and the social standing of the initiated member within the Bwami hierarchy.
