Description:
This charming antique figurine depicts a lively putti (cherub) in a dynamic dancing or running pose, one arm raised aloft holding what appears to be a cluster of grapes or flowers, draped in a flowing sash around the waist. The figure is cast in spelter or bronze-finish metal with a rich dark patina, mounted atop an ornate cylindrical pedestal base that bears an inscription reading 'BEAUX' (likely part of 'Les Beaux Arts' or a French title), decorated with applied floral and ribbon swag relief work. The entire composition rests on a turned white marble base with characteristic grey and rust veining, a hallmark of French decorative art presentation pieces from the late 19th to early 20th century. This style of putti figurine on a marble plinth was enormously popular during the French Belle Époque and Victorian eras, produced by numerous Parisian foundries and decorative arts manufacturers for the bourgeois mantelpiece market. The casting shows good detail in the curly hair, facial features, and drapery, consistent with quality spelter production of the period circa 1880–1910. The overall height is estimated at approximately 14–16 inches including the marble base. Condition is Very Good for age: the dark patina is consistent and attractive throughout the metal components, the marble base shows minor surface scratches and natural veining discoloration, and there are no visible chips, cracks, or repairs noted to the figure itself. A handsome and displayable antique decorative sculpture.
