Description:
This is a vintage Aria 5-string resonator banjo dating to the 1970s, bearing the distinctive script 'Aria' logo inlaid in iridescent mother-of-pearl on the black-finished peghead. Aria (Aria Pro II / Arai & Co.) was a prominent Japanese instrument manufacturer that produced high-quality instruments during the 1970s-80s, and their banjos from this era are well-regarded among bluegrass and folk players for their solid construction and playability. The peghead features an elaborate multi-element MOP inlay design including diamond and cross motifs, while the dark rosewood fretboard is adorned with striking bowtie-shaped mother-of-pearl position markers at every other fret — a hallmark of mid-grade to upper-tier Japanese banjos of the period. The instrument features a full resonator body with a chrome-plated tension hoop, slotted bracket hooks, and a mylar or frosted head that appears intact and properly tensioned; the chrome hardware throughout shows the quality plating typical of Japanese craftsmanship of the era. A 5th-string capo spike is visible on the neck at approximately the 7th fret position, indicating this was set up for serious bluegrass play. The banjo is housed in its original black hard shell case with gold/amber velvet interior lining and chrome latches, which remains fully functional and protective. Condition is rated Very Good overall: the instrument presents cleanly with no visible cracks, breaks, or major damage; minor surface wear and light oxidation to some chrome hardware is consistent with age; frets appear to have good life remaining; the head is intact with no tears; a professional setup and fresh strings are recommended before playing. This is an excellent intermediate-to-advanced player's instrument or a fine addition to a vintage Japanese instrument collection.
