Description:
This charming antique Victorian-era folding rocking chair is a classic example of late 19th-century American parlor furniture, likely dating to the 1880s-1900s. The chair is constructed of solid walnut or walnut-stained hardwood featuring the distinctive folding scissor-joint mechanism that made these chairs popular for Victorian parlors, sewing rooms, and nurseries — they could be compactly stored when not in use. The crest rail is adorned with hand-carved relief decoration depicting scrolling acanthus leaves and a central rosette motif, a hallmark of Victorian Eastlake and Renaissance Revival aesthetic sensibilities. Both the back panel and seat cushion are upholstered in a coordinating cream-ground floral tapestry fabric depicting roses and scrolling foliage in muted tones of rose, sage green, and dusty blue, finished with a gold-toned decorative gimp trim border. The gracefully curved arms flow into the rocker rails, and turned stretchers connect the folding base components. Estimated dimensions are approximately 36 inches tall x 22 inches wide x 30 inches deep. Condition is rated Good to Very Good for age: the wood frame shows honest patina and light surface scratches consistent with 100+ years of use, minor scuffs to the rocker rails, and small bolt/rivet hardware visible at the folding joints showing expected oxidation. The tapestry upholstery appears to be a later replacement in good condition with no visible tears or major staining, though light general soiling is present. The folding mechanism appears intact and functional. A highly collectible piece for Victorian furniture collectors, Denver antique enthusiasts, and Colorado estate decorators.
