This is a vintage Anglo concertina featuring the classic hexagonal body design that has been the standard form for this instrument since the mid-19th century. The instrument is covered in a striking red pearloid (celluloid or early plastic) material that gives it a distinctive marbled crimson appearance, a popular decorative finish used on concertinas and accordions from roughly the 1920s through the 1960s. The Anglo concertina system is bisonoric, meaning each button produces two different notes depending on whether the bellows are pushed or pulled, making it the preferred system for Irish traditional music, English folk, and American old-time music — all genres with strong followings in Colorado's folk music community. The instrument appears to be a 20-button Anglo in the C/G configuration (the most common tuning), with white plastic or bone-style buttons arranged in the traditional layout across both hexagonal ends, accompanied by metal-grille air buttons. The bellows are constructed of alternating red and tan/gold cardboard folds with metal end plates and silver-toned corner protectors securing the joints. Original leather hand straps are present on both ends, with one side retaining a buckle-style adjustable strap; one strap shows significant wear and cracking consistent with age. Condition is rated Fair to Good: the red pearloid panels show extensive surface crazing, cracking, and stress fractures throughout both end plates — a common age-related issue with vintage celluloid coverings — and the bellows show wear at the folds but appear intact without obvious tears. Several buttons are present and appear functional, though playability and reed condition cannot be fully verified from inspection alone and the instrument should be evaluated by a concertina technician before performance use. This piece has strong appeal as a display instrument, folk music prop, or restoration project for the dedicated concertina enthusiast.
