Description:

This is a large-format hand-engraved brass charger tray estimated at approximately 36 inches in diameter, exhibiting the hallmarks of Middle Eastern or Southeast Asian metalwork craftsmanship likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The tray is constructed from a single sheet of hammered brass and features an extraordinarily dense, multi-register engraved decoration executed entirely by hand using chasing and repoussé techniques. The outermost rim is finished with a scalloped or beaded edge, transitioning inward to a wide border band filled with geometric triangle motifs, dot-punched fields, and stylized floral and foliate sprays. The interior well is organized into concentric decorative zones featuring a prominent central medallion surrounded by a frieze of mythological dragon or serpentine creatures amid bamboo and palm foliage, a design vocabulary consistent with Indo-Persian, Thai, or Chinese export brassware traditions popular during the Victorian and Edwardian trade eras. The middle register displays interlocking diamond lattice banding and scrolling vine work, while the broad shoulder zone carries repeating floral roundels and additional geometric punched patterns that demonstrate exceptional artisan skill and labor investment. Pieces of this scale and decorative complexity were commonly produced as ceremonial serving trays, tea table tops, or wall display pieces and were widely exported to Western markets through colonial-era trade routes; this example would have been highly desirable as a Moorish or Anglo-Indian interior accent. Condition is rated Good to Fair: the tray displays significant overall patina and oxidation darkening across the broad rim and well consistent with age and use, areas of copper-toned discoloration where the brass alloy has oxidized unevenly, light surface scratches throughout the engraved field, and some minor denting or warping to the rim in isolated spots visible in the detail photographs; no cracks or structural failures are noted and the engraving remains crisp and legible across the majority of the surface. This is a substantial decorative piece with strong appeal to collectors of antique metalwork, Bohemian or global eclectic interiors, and Colorado estate buyers seeking statement wall art or display pieces.
