Description:
  • Origin and History: The Iron Cross was first established by King Frederick William III of Prussia in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars and was subsequently renewed for the Franco-Prussian War (1870), World War I (1914), and World War II (1939).

  • Significance: It was awarded for bravery in battle and other military contributions, open to soldiers of all ranks and branches.

  • Nazi Germany: Adolf Hitler renewed the Iron Cross in 1939, making it a German rather than strictly Prussian decoration, and it became the highest award in the military and paramilitary forces of Nazi Germany during World War II, with the Knight's Cross being a higher variant.
