Charming and expressive limited edition print by W. Courtland Butterfield (1923–2003), titled Clown with Mirror (also known as The Mime or Applying Makeup in some catalogs). The piece portrays a clown caught in an intimate backstage moment — smiling as he applies his white makeup in front of a mirror.
Butterfield’s unique combination of loose ink outlines and soft watercolor washes gives the image both playfulness and poignancy, hallmarks of his celebrated Bucks County artistic style.
The print is hand-signed “W. Courtland Butterfield” in the image lower right, and signed and numbered in pencil 9/200 below the mat. The reverse includes a personal artist inscription, reading:
“To a friend of Tony & Jerry, best wishes, C. Butterfield, ’67.”
A yellow Bucks County Art Center label on the back authenticates the edition and numbering.
