Lot MK #121- RARE 19th Century Cut Glass Perfume Viles, Tear Catcher Flasks, Smelling Salt Bottles, lachrymatory
These 1870s viles were considered temporary and were disposed of after their contents had evaporated making them a rare find! They are made of cut glass, hand painted w/ gold gild, and measure 7" & 3". The larger of the two is missing its wax lid. There are many theories as to what these little glass bottles were made for. It is said that they were perfume bottles from exotic lands, another theory is that they were for collecting tears of sadness for ladies in mourning and some feel these were smelling salt bottles.
